Should You Hire a Web Designer?

There is no shortage of web design firms around today. And hey, add Poieo Design to the list. The question is, do you really need the services of companies like us for every web project? I'd like to say "YES!". But the reality is, not everyone needs to take on the expense of a professionally designed website. Professional design firms, like us, charge a decent chunk of change. But, as the old saying goes...you get what you pay for. Professionally designed websites, built by established and respected companies, offer features and an overall quality of design that you probably can't achieve on your own. However, you need to take a good look at what you actually need vs. what you can afford to spend.

Myth #1 - You need coding knowledge or expensive software to build your own website.

Not necessarily true. Now, if you're looking for an extravagant website with every bell and whistle you can possibly think of, then you're going to need a decent amount of knowledge, and probably some software to back it up. But, if you just need a basic site that tells visitors who you are, what you offer, and how they can get a hold of you, you can do all that with no coding skills and no fancy software.

Myth #2 - You need creative ability to design a good looking website.

Not necessarily true. If you are looking for a unique look tailored specifically to your organizations style, then you need to hire a designer. But, if you're willing to settle for pre-existing designs that will look good, but may not be a perfect fit, then you don't need any design ability. I would caution you though, if you wear brown pants with black shoes, find someone you trust to help you pick out a design. The easiest and most inexpensive way to build your own site is to use a site builder provided by a hosting or domain registration company. They will register your domain, host your site, and provide all the tools you need to build it yourself all for around $10 a month. We recommend Host Gator, but feel free to search around for other companies providing these services. When it's all said and done, will your 'built-by-me' site match your style perfectly and have the depth of features that a professional firm could provide? No. But it could be a good solution for your next small project.
